I was dating my boyfriend for a 4 months and just recently we broke up. On Saturday night he called me and invited me over to hangout, and we ended up talking about our problems, and getting back together. Everything was fine on Saturday night, minus the fact he broke his hand. I went home Sunday, hung out with some friends, had a pretty good day. Last night when I was on the phone talking to my best friend. My boyfriend texted me saying, “I have some bad news”. I expected him to say something like, “My ex girlfriend is pregnant” or something along those lines. He asked to come over and I said it was fine, and when he got here I was trying to figure out what that “bad news” was, and he finally told me that he went to the doctors this morning after I left to go get a cast and what not and when the doctor was treating his hand, my boyfriend told him he has 3 marble sized lumps on his hip area. The doctor told him that because Cancer runs so highly in his family to go get it checked out immediately.

My boyfriend is one of those guys who’s extremely hard headed and doesn’t like showing pain and emotion, but its clear that he’s scared, I mean who wouldn’t be? The things last night he was saying were starting to scare me, he was saying how much he really loved me, and how he doesn’t want to go hear from a doctor he has Cancer and he might as well just sit here and enjoy life, because he may not respond to treatment, so it wasn’t worth it, etc. [ His Uncle and Grandpa died from Cancer, after not responding to treatment ] I finally convinced him to go to the NCI [ National Cancer Institute] because I said of course I’d go with him, but he’s still having extreme doubts about getting treatment for it.

I’ve never had anyone in my close family die from Cancer, so I don’t know anything about it as far as treatments, supporting, the process, etc. Can anyone give me some good advice on how to be a supportive girlfriend? & How to explain to my boyfriend that he needs to do the treatments and the process, etc. We’re pretty good at communication, but without saying, “I’m there for you whenever you need me” – I want to word it differently without it sounding so cheezy.

Can someone please help me out?
